It is the first thing a new believer learns - that the blood of Jesus purifies us from all sin.

But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. - 1 John 1:7

But it is a further step in the Christian walk to learn that not only were our sins forgiven, but also our consciences were purified from all DEAD WORKS.

There is a difference between the purification FROM sin and the purification of our consciences FROM all dead works.

How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? - Hebrews 9:14
